This is not a review…this is atonement

“The path to paradise begins in hell.” ― Dante Alighieri

Disclaimer –I went into the Gabriel’s Inferno trilogy with a few preconceived notions. The main one being “this started out of Twilight fan fiction, it’s sure to be lacking in depth and substance.” I should have known better. My grandmother always taught me: never judge a book by its fan fiction roots.

But I digress. I decided to give the novels a read because I was intrigued to see how the author integrated Dante’s The Divine Comedy into his work. Turns out he did so masterfully. But I just was not ready to admit that the story got to me. I even wrote a somewhat disparaging review of Gabriel’s Inferno on my blog. I never write negative reviews, which is telling.

As an aside, in effort to find my way out of reviewer’s limbo, that blog is now gone with the proverbial wind.

I thought I was fighting the good literary fight. But in truth, I was only waging war with my stubborn bookish self. Now after having read books two and three, I have to be honest. This trilogy charmed its way into my heart, breaking down all my preconceived notions. I’m crazy for this series and having a serious case of reviewer remorse. I must atone to the Literary Gods and set things right as I strive to find my way to The Mount of Joy.

Ok. Here goes. I was wrong! People, this doesn’t happen often; unless you consider often a heck of a lot. I misjudged Sylvain Reynard. The man, whoever he may be, is a master storyteller. His deft use language, his passion for literature and the arts come alive on the pages. His characterization of Gabriel and Julianne, the empathy he feels for them, is achingly beautiful. Not only did they come alive on the page. so did Dante and Beatrice. He masterfully wove one of the greatest literary works of the Western World into a modern day tale. He crafted a story that kept this cynic coming back for more. The story of the professor and Julianne is chock full of tasteful eroticism, purpose and intensity; a story of romantic love- but also love itself, its power, its limitations, and its consequences. The themes of forgiveness and redemption should strike a chord with us all.

I grew to love Gabriel and Julianne and all their quirks and fragility. At first I despised them, especially Julianne. I found her too docile, her wild eye innocence grated. There were times when I wanted to shake her. In truth her character hit very close to home — too close. I remember being the naive waif scared of my own shadow. However, I should have known that just like I blossomed and came into my own, so too would Julianne.

Sylvain Reynard, how could I have ever doubted you? Your style is dazzling. Your literary voice is haunting. You have created an original love story that will not soon be forgotten. Which brings us to the final installment of the series, Gabriel’s Redemption.

Gabriel’s Redemption is by far my favorite of the three novels. I didn’t want it to end. I’m truly going to miss these characters. In the final installment, we find our beloved hero and heroine settling into wedded bliss. However, as Shakespeare will attest: “the course of true love never runs smooth”. This is certainly the case with  Gabriel and Julia. Their course is littered with ghosts from the past, jumping out and shouting “boo” at every corner. Then there are those pesky demons that reside in the mind, tempting and tormenting. On top of that, they have those normal issues that newlyweds must go through: learning to cohabit with another human being, debating if and when to start a family, etc.

Can Gabriel and Julianne put to rest the ghost from Christmas past? Will Satan get thee behind? Will a baby make three? Is museum’s sex all it’s cracked up to be? Does true love really conquer all? You’ll just have to read and find out.

Sweet Tea Musings

In every life there’s always a moment

Where we lose ourselves

And the gray takes over.

Colorized in shades of black and blue
there are times

Where all we see is a haze of yellow
and we find ourselves
Basking in the warmth of assurance.

A mirage of transcendental tones,
Self and not self

Doership and discipleship
we wrestle with reality and myth.
Creating distinctions in the labyrinth of our minds,
Painting on a canvas

Of the ridiculous and sublime
Ruminating upon

Thoughts of power,

Fate and choice
Salted, peppered, and sprinkled,

With philosophical introspection,
of purple, green and dazzling shades of

The Existential who?
The seas, the sky,

Me, myself

And I,
Creating, defining,

Defying, perplexing,

Pondering, wondering,

Wandering oxygen becomes fire

With red being the only hue.

Beauty and the Self Conscious Beast.

Imperfection and flaws are beautiful no matter how strange or dysfunctional they may be. We all strive for perfection, but it is an unattainable, elusive dream . OK, unless you are Timothy Olyphant! Hubba, friggin hubba.

390_1timothy_olyphant_2

But I digress….

We all have things we would like to change about ourselves. Learning to accept that we are perfectly imperfect is the key to peace of mind and giving our mirrors a much needed reprieve.  Let’s own our flaws and make them fabulous. Idiosyncrasies should be embraced. How boring life would be without them?

We women especially put so much effort, into our hair, makeup and dress, setting such a high standard by comparing ourselves to others when we should just learn to love ourselves for who we are, flaws and all. Those flaws are what make us uniquely us. Let’s learn to be confident in our insecurities. Our fears do not define our worth, nor naysayers out to cast their stones. Let’s declare our independence from self doubt.  Remember, under all those gorgeous dresses, lovely hats, and winning smile, even Kate Middleton probably has some really quirky qualities about her, like drinking milk straight from the cartoon, or something deranged like that.

Less Fear…More Action.

Society’s greatest ill is apathy and the cost of that indifference is losing touch with our humanity.  It’s not enough to just observe. We have to do more, expect more and be more.  Being submissive is not an option when it comes to economical, social, environmental and political issues. Our voices matter. Our actions count.

Don’t just observe. Get involved.  Don’t just think. Do. Don’t just exist. Live.

 Apathy

Apathy your momentous

Tune lulls us to sleep.

In our somber slumber

Dreaming dreamless dreams.

Solace is found in a mind-

Numbing hypnotic sound.

In our cationic state

There is no hope, no pain.

Only blissful unawareness.

In our hibernation

We are safe from-

Addiction,

War,

Famine,

Genocide,

Poverty,

Racism.

They don’t exist

In our drowsy bliss.

Silent and unaware

We doze on as the world

Spins Madly on

Raging on

Warring on.

We lay lost;

Entranced in the

Sublime banality of

A shadow of leafless,

Fruitless trees.

John F. Kennedy

Do You Know Me?

Do you know me?
The girl behind the glasses..
The girl in the vintage dress
The one who has spent her life
Lost in books and quiet meditation.
Sheltered from a world of hurt.
But still always questioning her worth.
The girl who had lived her life
Behind guarded humor
And a world of dreams
Hiding.
Afraid of ridicule
Harsh critique
Shallow judgments
And illicit schemes
A friend of caution.
Always existing just to please.
Focusing on everyone’s else s need.
Do you know me?
The girl behind the glasses
What lies beneath the surface
Of that woman child called, ME.

Goodbye Neverland

This is a poem I wrote about the loss of friendship.See below.  At the time, I wasn’t ready to embrace letting go.  It’s funny how we meet certain people and just know they are fated to be in our lives forever, but the universe has different plans. Reflecting back, I now understand that not all friendships are meant to last although every friendship has a purpose.  Friends come into our life for a reason. They offer us just what we need at that particular moment in our lives..They help us grow…that growth could take a week, 6 months or years, but when we have arrived at our spiritual destination it is time to move on, time to let go..Letting go is never easy. It hurts!  But the best thing we can do for ourselves is to keep looking forward and believe that everything is as it’s meant to be.

Letting go means letting go of fear. letting go of guilt, and letting go of blame.. Don’t be afraid to move on. People will always fall away, and hey sometimes they fall back.. However, we have to live in the now, to know that for the time being we’ve learned all we can from them. Don’t grieve for what is lost but rejoice for what was. Friendships are sacred and they reflect who we are. Just as we change so do they. Things don’t happen to us. They happen for us.

If there’s one lesson life has taught me is the only constant in this world are the hands of time and change..Roll with it…

Goodbye Neverland

Sunny days, walking along the beach

Collecting fragile seashells and memories;

That must not to be overlooked or forgotten.

Sitting and basking in the sublime breeze

As the tides rolled in, lulling us with a sense of peace.

We talked about books, politics and philosophy

And we argued about the latest trends;

All the while we reflected on life in all its intricacies,

As we marveled at the crystal blue waters;

Like a marvelous friendship that never seemed to end.

Blanketed by serene winds belonging to no land,

I sat with my lost-boy from Never-Never-land.

The dreamy landscape forever expanding

We were taken away to mystic distant realms afar.

Suddenly the clouds rolled in,

The wind turned cold and the sky dark and gray.

I reached for your hand thinking,

We will run and hide from the rain together; but

You were nowhere to be found.

Left alone with the ominous sounds of waves

Crashing on the shore, I called out for you, but

The thunder cracked the air, silencing my breath away.

Where did you go my friend?

I need you now to guide me home.

Who will help me board up the windows?

I cannot secure the house all tight alone all night.

Was it just an illusion, thinking you would stand with me and fight?

How could you leave me alone battling the storms?

Consumed with pain and fear for our friendship so fragile,

That it could not withstand mere earthly elements.

Just like a storm, we grew together, raining our tears,

Until we ceased to be; just as a storm ends bringing about

The inevitable clear blue skies of fair weather, friend.

“If I cannot fly, let me sing.”

I added two new songs to SoundCloud. I’m excited to reunited with my dad and put music to these tunes.  I’m hoping he’ll teach me how to play the guitar. We tried it when I was eight, my fingers protested greatly. I’m nothing if not a wus. Now many years later I think they’re ready to reunite with the strings. We shall see.

Soul Mates-The Pot, The Kettle, The Pea, the Pod and a Cat.

Image

Ah, soul mates the stuff chick flicks and Hallmark cards are made of. But who are these elusive creatures really?  I don’t necessarily equate a soul mate with hearts and flowers or sexual chemistry.  In my opinion, soul mates come in many forms friends, parents, siblings, lovers, chocolate, my cat. 😉

Soul mates come into our lives to teach us something.how to laugh, think, feel, be, love and often how to let go. They enable us to grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally.

These relationships are intense, magnetic,  inexplicable, mystical and based on a strong connection.  I can count my soul mates on one hand. But I’m an introvert, and although I love humanity, I’m not often that crazy about people. It takes a lot for me to genuinely bond, but when I do it sticks. I’m grateful for my soul mates and the lessons learned.  They’ve enriched my soul and left indelible impressions on my heart.

Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love describes the soul mate relationship best…

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.

A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master…”
