Notes from the Other Side

Sometimes sorrow turns into
irreversible regret.
We choose to live an icebox
existence.
Wallowing in misfortune’s
frosty glass.
Consorting with memories
Squabbling with dreams.

The poet too has felt life
interrupted, days that vanish
upon awakening.
I’ve known suffering and
the pull of solitary confinement.

Now looking back from a happier
vista. I’m hear to tell you,
the pitch of pain may never
be unheard, but it does gets softer,
fading into a bittersweet refrain.
The past becomes part of
your case history, to be read
by nostalgia’s light on rain
soaked nights.

In time the visible world brightens
Let it entice you with the woo of
the today and what will be.
Take refuge in the heat of
places uncharted, linger in
the sweet realism of the hour.

Walk toward the future
with unshackled feet.
The misbegotten shadows
behind you now.
Let the smudge of the sun,
and the warmth of a steadfast
hand be your guide.

  1. Very heartfelt … deeply soulish. I especially love the lines:

    “I’m hear to tell you,
the pitch of pain may never
be unheard, but it does gets softer,
    fading into a bittersweet refrain.”

I can very well identify with this and, indeed, “the visible world” for me really has “brightened,” enticing me “with the woo of the today and what will be.”

Thank you for this wonderfully expressive, poignant poem!

    1. Thanks. Sadness is definitely overrated especially by us creative types and over thinkers. I really believe the people that are meant to be in our lives are our greatest source of joy. I also think every loss teaches us something. We should remember the lesson but let the rest go. 💕

  2. Love these descriptions!

    “Wallowing in misfortune’s
    frosty glass.
    Consorting with memories
    Squabbling with dreams.”

Squabbling – what a great word! Tosha this is nice, to be able to look back and see the reconciliations one has made. Btw, I have set a schedule for transitioning socially, going all girl in the world in two years. The decision made, the world is lighter, thinking back on hopeless memories and feeling the lightness of hope is nice, and this poem speaks to that. Went dancing in my flair jeans and sparkly sweater, no flirting, just dancing to a classic rock cover band. As I said, didn’t flirt, but still have it on good authority that I looked cute. A lot better than consorting with memories. 🙋🏻‍♀️

    1. That’s wonderful. I’m happy for you. Live your best life, girl! I’m sure you look lovely. It’s crazy how painful things that almost break us turn into blessings in the end. It’s also neat how we can keep evolving and changing. We don’t have to stay stagnant. There’s always going be people we miss or choices we wish we took, but that shouldn’t hinder loving the people who are here for us and appreciating all the wonderful things se do have. I guess we become happier when we let go of the things we can’t control and focus on the things we can. I know I have a greater appreciation for all I have. I’m lucky to be surrounded by love. I hope you are too. You deserve all the happiness in the world. 💕💕

  3. 💕 Truly Beautiful, Tosha.
” the pull of solitary confinement” as well, fading into a bittersweet refrain.
Thanks for smile, and those beautiful words. 💙
