The craving for them is on par
with my desire for chocolate
and James Purefoy.
It’s almost carnal, this longing I have
for the blank pages.
How I love to let the want fester and grow.
My mind a compass of yearning.
This urge to fill them with erotic possibilities,
kissing the pages with ink and language.
I approach them like a hopeful lover.
I don’t need shoes or jewelry or a line of men out my door.
I just need you to direct me to the nearest bookstore or stationary shop.
I can never get enough. I’m impractical, wanton, greedy…
My house is a shrine cover to cupboard. Any day now I expect them
to get together and throw a meet and greet.
I don’t know how they cope with the burden
of my chaotic musings, my erratic penmanship, my half truths,
my outright lies, my heart’s telling secrets.
I love them for never being judgy of my judgement.
Always there to offset any loneliness.
They are the most patient of listeners. I scrawl my confessions out
and there’s always another lovely page ready to learn more.
I confess I might need an intervention, journal rehab.
Until then it’s just me and my sweet notebooks
of beginnings where preservation and obsession
never end.
-Tosha Michelle
I identify with this completely. I have bins of journals, some old and filled (and fun and interesting to read) and many still blank… waiting for me. And even with all those blank ones, I have to be pulled away from them in that Barnes & Noble section. Pains me not to get more…

I pay homage, of your pledge to paper, & the pen you spill in blood & sweat, of love as only pain would have it.
You never cease to amaze.

Love this! I can relate— I can spend hours in stationary shops, and probably have as many blank journals as full ones.
BTW, does James Purefoy come with nuts or ancreamy filling? 😉

Laurel, we’ll have to go journal shopping one day. As for Purefoy, I’m not sure. I’d take him either way. Sigh.

I used to keep paper journals… tbh I’m not sure where I left them.. probably in a recycling bin in the old house.

Hi Tosha, i love this poem, it is meaty, reflective, and i love the idea of writing a poem to my diaries, it reminds me in a way of the Moody Blues, song dear diary (which i also love). The poem is wonderfully constructed and so sinuous it draws you one on from one word to the next, from one image to the next and from one sound and rhythm to the next. Thanks for blogging it, and thanks for liking and following on my blog, best wishes and blessings, Charles.

Journals are great, aren’t they? Mine are a jumble of thoughts, half-baked stories/poems, words, and lists…and I love them. A terrific poem’s poem that captures it well.

Kissing the pages with ink – I’ve never looked at it that way, but I’ll never not think of this poem when I write forevermore. 🙂

I find it impossible to walk out of a stationery shop without at least something, whether I need it or not. Notebooks have a magic all their own.

I loved, loved, loved this! I actually have a story about journals in my life…
http://www.kerisjournal.wordpress.com
I give journals as a gift every year. I tell my kids… you life is an empty book and everyday you write another page. You are your own author of your own story!
I kind of lived that when I found some old journals from my past.
I have wandered through your blog and absolutely love it! Keep writing! I know you are going places!
xoxo
