She Used To Be Mine

I love this song so much. See below. It’s so very relatable. I feel it to my core every time I listen to it. We all have times in our lives where we lose ourselves and feel a disconnect from the person we use to be.I’ve been there. It’s incredibly painful. Life can be so unpredictable and hard. Thankfully, it can be really beautiful too.

“She Used To Be Mine” is from the Broadway musical Waitress which was adapted from the 2007 film, that starred Keri Russell. Both the film and the musical are excellent. The Youtube is from the 2016 Tony Awards and it will bring tears to your eyes. It’s just that powerful of a performance.

Lyrics

It’s not simple to say
That most days I don’t recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them

It’s not easy to know
I’m not anything like I used be, although it’s true
I was never attention’s sweet center
I still remember that girl

She’s imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won’t ask for help
She is messy, but she’s kind

She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

It’s not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it’s all true

And now I’ve got you
And you’re not what I asked for
If I’m honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who’ll be reckless, just enough
Who’ll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she’s bruised and gets used by a man who can’t love
And then she’ll get stuck

And be scared of the life that’s inside her
Growing stronger each day ‘til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That’s been gone, but used to be mine
Used to be mine

She is messy, but she’s kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

In honor of the girl I used to be, I have brought back my bangs or fringe as the British say. It was time for a change. A new hair beginning. Ha!

  1. I love this song do much. And you’re right it does resonate a lot. I didn’t know it was from a Broadway production, but I love love the Sarah Bereilles version! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. I love this song Tosha. It was my favorite for the longest time when it came out with Sarah Bereillas. I didn’t know it was based on a broadway musical so that was interesting to see. And I agree it’s a song so many of us can relate too.
    Cheers

  3. One of my all time favorites, several times now my teen daughter has played it while we were traveling in the car beside me and we both sing right along with it, we know all the words. I change:
    “And now I’ve got you
And you’re just what I asked for
If I’m honest, I know I would not trade you back for…”

    Also:
“When she’s bruised and gets used by a world that won’t love
    And then she’ll get stuck

And be scared of the life that’s beside her
Growing stronger each day ‘til it finally reminds her…”
On the top of the playlist together with “soft place to land.”

    gros bisous, BERNARD
